Story
Grandad passed away 2 weeks before his 100th birthday. He was humble and unassuming when it came to his role during WW2. He had amazing pictures and these have been shared along with his log books so they could be catalogued by the RAF Museum Cosford. Grandad was a Wireless Operator and Air Gunner during WW2 and spent part of his time in North Africa mostly on Wellingtons and Liberators. When back home he was based in various Lincoln airbases he was crew on Wellingtons and Lancaster’s. It was during this time he met Granny a hairdresser in the WAF who before the end of WW2 became Mrs Winifred Dawson.
Grandad only started to open up and tell us about his time during WW2 in the last few years previously you just had little snippets whilst he sat pouring over the information in various Bomber Command history books occasionally saying well they got that wrong. Thanks to Alan from the RAF Association Wrekin and Wellington branch we discovered some fascinating facts about some of the flights he was a crew member on after he researched into some of grandads log book entries.
Grandad has always been my hero, the outpouring of support and desire by so many to show their respects at his funeral by lining the route from the crematorium entrance has led me to set up this just giving page, so Grandads story that has captured the hearts of so many will also help those who need help and support from the RAF Benevolent Fund.
