Story
I'm a bike mechanic who loves climbing, carving, circus skills, and of course, cycling. I also volunteer at Rape Crisis Tyneside and Northumberland (RCTN), a charity that blows my mind with the amazing work they do and how many people they support.
I'm going to cycle further than I ever have before: from Canada to Mexico. That'll be over 3000 km in a month! It's going to be a challenge. I'll be sharing my journey as I go, from bike build, training and kit selection, to what's happening as I ride. Please like and share my FB page to keep up to date (www.facebook.com/sacarrie). All money raised will go to RCTN: don't worry, you're not paying for my trip!
RCTN provide support to women and girls aged 13+ who have experienced sexual assault. This includes: counselling, group work, practical and emotional support, phone and email support.
Stats say 1 in 4 women in the UK will experience sexual violence in their life time. But in my experience, most women have a story, as shown by the #metoo campaign. Personally, I can testify to the long lasting impact assault has; how it affects and colours your daily experiences and relationships. I also know that the right support can make a massive difference. A life-changing difference.
RCTN invest a huge amount in their volunteers. I received 9 months of weekly training, with intensive weekends, before starting to work on the phones and emails. Training the volunteers so that they are equipped to deliver these specialised services requires both time and money.
RCTN has been running for 40 years and their services are still vital. Please donate and support me on my cycle so RCTN can continue to change lives across the North East.
