We teach children about food and farming to create a more food literate generation

Story

As we enter into 2019 we are ready to mark a major milestone for The Royal Highland Education Trust.  It is 20 years since RHET started the journey of 'Taking the Classroom to the Countryside' and better educating the children of Scotland in where their food comes from, and making them more aware of the environment around them.

To help mark this milestone, George Lawrie, chairman of the RHET board, is undertaking a Tractor Tour and visiting a school in each of the 12 Countryside Initiative areas around Scotland.  This will take place the week prior to the Royal Highland Show, starting off from the showground on the 12th of June and finishing back at the showground on the 19th of June.  The planned route will cover around 600 miles and George will be visiting 2 schools per day.

To help undertake this trip Massey Ferguson with the help of Reekie Ltd Perth is kindly supplying a tractor and Allison Enterprises and Binn Group, both of Glenfarg, are supplying a trailer that will be used to carry a Highland cow sculpture made from recycled farm metal which will be auctioned at a Gala dinner later in the year.  Also, thanks to the help of Ringlink, one of whose members are supplying the diesel for the tour.  We are indebted to the generosity of these companies allowing us to undertake this tour.

Please follow our Facebook page www.facebook.com/TheRoyalHighlandEducationTrust/ to hear when other companies sign up their support.  As well as celebrating our 20th birthday we have set a challenge of raising £10 for every mile travelled.

Our purpose is to bring farming and the working countryside and its practices to life for young people. We work with partners to provide and deliver world-leading learning opportunities for all Scotland’s young people aged 3 to 18 about, in and through the Scottish agricultural environment and the countryside. RHET aims to provide the opportunity for every child in Scotland to learn about food, farming and the countryside and to create a wider understanding of the environmental, economic and social realities of rural Scotland. This is achieved through a number of key activities: 1. Farm visits for schools 2. Classroom speaker talks by volunteer farmers 3. Providing free educational resource materials for schools 4. Outdoor education events across Scotland 5. Competitions and projects for schools 6. Training farmers and teachers in the delivery of information relating to food and farming 7. The Royal Highland Show education programme for visiting schools and Children’s Education Centre
