Story
This is the third year of Jersey Reds fundraising for charities through a team cycling event around the island. In previous years we have completed the ride in order to support the Teenage Cancer Trust following their support in treatment of one of our players.
This year we will be supporting another charity close to one of the players' hearts - Huw Owen. See Huw's story below:
Huw's brother, Emyr, sadly passed away from cancer in 2009, aged 12. After his diagnosis in 2008, Emyr underwent a year of chemo and radiotherapy at the Children's Hospital of Wales, supported by his family and the Welsh children's cancer charity, Latch. Emyr loved rugby, dreaming of one day becoming a professional rugby player. He was a cheeky young man and loved spending time with his family and friends.
Latch is a charity that supports the children and their families who are being treated by the Oncology Unit at the Children's Hospital of Wales, whose catchment area stretches from Chepstow in the South to Aberystwyth in the North. Around 70 new cases are being diagnosed every year, underlining the need to support these children and their families when they need it most.
Among the support provided to children and their families, Latch provide accommodation to families, free of charge, to stay close to their children at the hospital. In addition, they provide a range of other support, including Social Work, Financial Support, Emotional Support, and Short Local Holidays to places such as the Karavan 4 the Kidz in Porthcawl.
Huw and his family run the Emyr Owen Branch of Latch, fundraising and collecting money for the charity to continue to support the incredible work Latch do year on year, and to continue to celebrate the wonderful life of Huw's brother, Emyr.
