Story
Have you registered as an organ donor?
It takes two minutes at www.organdonation.nhs.uk. You can also call 0300 123 23 23 or text SAVE to 62323.
I've been having conversations and dispelling myths about organ donation for almost forty years.
See the Ranju's birthday teampage linked below for details of my son's fundraising for the Oxford Transplant Centre.
My renal story
Having suffered a renal illness as a young girl, my chronic kidney disease was discovered in 1978 and I was fortunate to be seen and treated by the teaching hospitals in Oxford, my care being overseen by some of the top medical researchers in the world. They were open to experimentation and so was I. For a decade and a half I managed to defer dialysis by a careful combination of medication, dietary control and lifestyle discipline. In 1994 I received a donated kidney which served me well until last year. Although the accompanying regime of medication brought its own complications and consequences, I was able to enjoy a wonderfully fulfilling life. I have been on automated peritoneal dialysis at home for the last year. I truly appreciate how fortunate I am.
The cause
When first diagnosed, I desperately wanted to do somethng about it and got on with raising funds for research and facilities, organising everything from coffee mornings and cookery classes to saree sales and fashion shows. More importantly, I set about raising awareness of organ donation, distributing countless NHS leaflets and gently encouraging everyone I met to consider registration; especially amongst ethnic minorities where the organ transplant demand is greatest and yet the propensity to donate is lower. But this is the first time I am using social media to achieve my goal, which is to support the Oxford Kidney Unit to offer even better care to those who follow in my footsteps.
Thank you
Thank you for taking the time to visit my page. Donating through JustGiving is efficient and secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money (less a small contribution to their costs) directly to the Oxford Kidney Unit Trust Fund. I am most grateful for your support.
