So this Summer I will be completing (well hopefully) 3 bucket list challenges to support the work of YMCA Guildford where it is a privilege to work and support young people from all sorts of backgrounds realise their dreams. From secure housing to a job they really want.
YMCA Guildford has been in the town for 163 years and while many things have changed the support of young people has not. It is still very much needed. We currently house 148 young people. The funding generated from me doing these challenges will specifically go towards supporting the 34 young people living at YMCA Guildford Foyer near the cricket ground. These young people have experienced some horrific trauma in their short lives and/or made some challenging decisions. This includes domestic abuse, drug and alcohol dependency, trafficking and homelessness.
The support offered to these young people is firstly to give them a safe, secure and settled accommodation. Then work with them to inspire them to follow their dreams. The money raised through these challenges will support and fund a program of activities and group work called 'more than a room'. These activities will include employability sessions, cookery classes and also community building sessions such as boxing and gardening. All the sessions have the aim of creating greater independence skills for this group of young people.
My challenges seem so simple compared to the journey these young people are on... however they are going to challenge me and are as follows...
22nd June - Chase the Sun... a 205 mile bike ride from East to West across the country. Starting from the Isle of Sheppey in Kent at 4.39am, the concept is simple make it to Burnham on Sea before the sun sets!
4th August - Ride London, 100 miles around some roads I know very well but with an epic finish on the Mall in London
22nd September - Outlaw X. A half Ironman consisting of the following. A 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and then a half marathon (21km).
Anything you can afford will be amazing and I assure you will be used to fund some awesome work.
Thanks
Paul
