Members of 99 Squadron are taking on the challenge of cycling from RAF Brize Norton, UK to Landsmeer, Holland. This 450 mile slog is to commemorate Dutch Remembrance Day and the crew of 99 Squadron who lost their lives when their aircraft crashed in Landsmeer, Holland in 1941.
On 29 September 1941 a Wellington Bomber T2879 of 99 Squadron took off from RAF Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire. After completing it's mission over Italy, on it's return journey to RAF Waterbeach, T2879 crashed close to Landsmeer in the Netherlands. Sadly all on board were killed. A memorial site has been erected in Landsmeer and is tirelessly cared for by the kind and generous people there.
99 Squadron has always maintained a close bond with the people of Landsmeer. We partake in a parade every year on Dutch Remembrance Day and are very proud of our relationship with the wonderful people of Landsmeer and Holland as a whole.
