Story
WO2 Mac McKenzie will lead a team from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine to take part in the 100th International Four Day Marches at Nijmegen, raising money for Fisher House UK, a Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity appeal.
I have been privileged to work amongst the most amazing Army, Navy and RAF professionals based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB). In that time, hundreds of our injured service men and women have been treated by the QEHB medical staff, with many subsequently undergoing rehabilitation at Headley Court. Whilst at the QEHB, patients and their families can stay at Fisher House and be
supported by the staff there. This amazing facility enables patients and families to use the “home away from home”, located within a few minutes walking
distance of the hospital wards. In the past 3 years, over 2000 people have stayed there, the equivalent of over 11,000 nights of accommodation.
After many operational tours, I and many others in the team have been fortunate to have had enjoyable and successful careers. Many, however, were not so fortunate and have suffered life changing injuries as a result of serving their country. I am truly honoured to have many of our bravest men and women as my friends; they have overcome severe adversity but continue to thrive in their new world.
Funded entirely by the QEHB Charity, Fisher House relies on donations from the public in order to care for our military families.
The Nijmegen Marches cover 100 miles over 4 days in the height of summer, carrying at least 15 kg of kit. It is the biggest civilian and military march in the world with over 45,000 civilian walkers and 5,000 military marchers from all over the globe. The event attracts over 2 million visitors which creates a very special atmosphere. 'The Walk of the World' is celebrating its 100th march in 2016.
The team has trained hard and qualified through the UK 50 mile event, so look out for updates on our journey on the '100ste Vierdaagse'.
Any donations in support of Fisher House will be greatly received. A big thank you from
Mac, Scott Joe, Leone, Matt, Jo, Tory, Kelly-Anne, Andrew, Jodie, Jay, Tat and Bish.
