I have been inspired to raise money for the Meningitis Research Foundation by Joseph - a little miracle! Joseph, my friend's little boy, was born in July 2012 - at 2 weeks old he suddenly started having seizures. The amazing staff in A&E quickly diagnosed bacterial meningitis - a disease that can kill in hours if not treated.
Joseph almost died and he spent the next 3.5 months receiving treatment in hospital. Joseph is amazing and is fortunate to have survived but he has been left with a variety of medical and development issues and has had 12 surgeries including 4 brain surgeries - he is only 6!
Sadly Joseph is one of many. In 2015 380,000 people died of meningitis worldwide and over 1 million survivors are left with severe after effects such as limb loss and brain injury. The Meningitis Resesrch Foundation wants to help hugely reduce the number of people who get meningitis through funding research and to see more people survive with a better quality of life and reduced disability.
I would love to think that by taking part in this run I can help towards the Meningitis Research Foundation reaching their goals and play a small part in ensuring other people don't have to suffer the effects of this truly horrible and life changing disease.
