I have decided that on my 40th year on this planet I would set myself a challenge like no other I have done before. I have been training hard the last few months to give me the best shot at completing the following events for 2020:
Feb 23rd Leicestershire Half ✔
Mar 1st Warwick Half ✔
Mar 29th Sheffield half **Delayed to September**
Apr 19th Longhorn Marathon **Cancelled**
May virtual half marathons x 2✔
June 7th Woodhall 10K **Cancelled** Virtual full
June 28th Humber Half **Cancelled** TBC
July Hurricane 80K challenge in a weekend.✔
Aug Newark Half **Cancelled**
Sept 13th Finish with Great North Run **virtual**
Possible Marathon in October depending on circumstances.
I have chosen as part of this challenge to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund. Not only is this an excellent charity, they were also the charity of choice for the family of SAC(T) Scott Stevenson who sadly passed away after an injury sustained while representing the RAF in an inter-services Rugby League fixture against the Army.
Scotty was an incredible rugby player and a valued teammate of the Boston Buccaneers, his sudden passing was a shock to us all. His true personality showed as teams across the UK from grass roots to Challenge Cup held tributes to him. Scotty’s influence was seen even as far as the World Cup in Japan.
In addition to the aid to grieving families the RAF Benevolent fund are busy providing the following:
Assistance to the RAF Family, when they are in need.
Maintain and preserve the RAF Memorial in London on behalf of the nation.
Support the morale and wellbeing of the serving RAF.
Responsible for the Bomber Command Memorial in central London.
They also provide services such as the Airplay programme supporting children in service families, counselling support and respite breaks. The work they do means so much to many families of serving and previously serving families as well as the RAF Community.
