Hi to all those that know me and my family,
I would like to make you aware of a challenge I have set myself starting on March 16th (Also my birthday) and finishing on April 16th.
As you may or may not be aware, my dad (David Morey) was recently diagnosed with a rare brain disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
WHAT IS PROGRESSIVE SUPRANUCLEAR PALSY?
- Progressive Supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare progressive condition that can cause problems with balance, movement, vision, speech and swallowing.
- It's caused by increasing numbers of brain cells becoming damaged over time.
- The PSP Association estimates there are around 4,000 people with PSP living in the UK.
- But it's thought the true figure could be much higher as many cases may be misdiagnosed.
- Most cases of PSP develop in people who are over the age of 60.
- There's currently no cure for PSP, but research is continuing into new treatments that aim to relieve symptoms and prevent the condition getting worse.
To finally get an official diagnosis of what my dad has been suffering with was a small lift for our family and meant that we could seek additional help and support from the right people and associations. One of these is PSPA, the charity I am raising money for.
You also may or may not be aware that i have been living up north in Sheffield for the last 12 years (haven't got a Yorkshire accent yet though) and with the nation in lockdown and my dad being high risk, i have not been able to return home much.
With this in mind I have decided to walk the equivalent distance from Sheffield to my home address in Cambridgeshire. The total distance in miles is 130 and that is how far I have set myself to walk/run between the 16th March and the 16th April.
Friends of mine will agree with me saying i am not currently the fittest player on the pitch so this will be a good initial challenge for me to complete.
I am blessed to have lots of pals who have already agreed to join me on some of my walks and I would love it if more people across the country would get out on a Walk For Dave at some point within the month and share your experiences with me or on social media.
I know this year has been hard financially for many but any donation you could make to this cause would be gratefully received by me, my family and those close to my dad.
I know my dad would be eternally grateful for your support.
Big Love - Matt & The Moreys x
