Story

Dear Friends,

On August 23rd I'll be attempting to climb to the summit of the Matterhorn, in the name of 3 children’s charities - Childline, Teenage Cancer Trust and Nordoff Robbins. All incredible charities reducing suffering and improving the lives of children and young people in need.

Looking impossibly steep and uncompromising, the Matterhorn is the most iconic peak in the world. At 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) it is one of the highest mountains in Europe. On Day 2 of our climb we will start at 4am and attempt to climb the 1300 metre vertical height gain up the rock ridge, over the snow section, to the summit and back in 13 hours.

I'm honoured to be representing Heavy Metal Truants. Having already raised a total of £580 000 their goal is to reach £666 000 (of course!) for these 3 children's charities in 2019.

Please help me reach this goal and donate now.

Thank you for your support!

Will x

More information on my climb:

  • Over the last 5 years I’ve climbed and skied around this majestic peak and have developed a strong aspiration to climb it.
  • Without training and experience it is one of the deadliest peaks in the world, however, each year numerous mountaineers attempt  the northeast Hörnli ridge (our route to the summit).
  • Myself and my climbing partner Sean Milbank will be led by experienced lead climbers who know the mountain well and we are taking every safety precaution available to us.
  • It won't be easy, but nothing worthwhile is - The most important attributes for the ascent are fitness, determination and 'sure footedness'. As such, training started in January, including running with weighted rucksack up the few hills I can find in Suffolk!
  • Our climb will take 2 days, Day 1 up to the Hörnli Hut at 3,200m (Aug 22). Day 2 Is where the real ascent begins, we will wake up at 4am and climb the rock ridge, to the snow section, summit and return to the Hornli Hut.
  • As a successful summit is not guaranteed I want to be clear that I’m raising money for this ‘summit attempt’ so whatever the result the children will benefit.

More information on the fundraising:

  • I will personally be paying all costs related to the climb, so every penny of your donation goes to the charities with absolutely no deductions.
  • Nordoff Robbins collect and account for all donations before distributing equally between themselves, ChildLine and Teenage Cancer Trust. For more information on the great work the Heavy Metal Truants: http://thetruantsuk.com/charities/
  • Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
  • Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
