Story
The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting us all. The best thing most of us can do is stay home, but that doesn't mean we can't still set ourselves challenges.
I love paragliding so I normally spend as much time as I can up hills and mountains or in the air. That, of course, is no longer possible, but there's only so much Netflix I can watch.
I set up the Coronavirus Indoor Mountaineering League to stay fit and connect with others during the UK lockdown. The aim is to climb some of the world's greatest peaks using only the stairs in our homes – and a little imagination.
My goal now is to ascend, and descend, Ben Nevis (1,345m) from sea level in one go. My staircase at home is 2.5m high, so I will have to go up and down it 538 times – that's 7,532 steps up, and 7,532 steps down. I will do this on Saturday, April 4.
I've already climbed Scafell Pike (978m or 391 staircase ascents) in this way and it was exhausting – and incredibly boring. But I'm now hoping that I can go further and raise a few quid for a great cause in the process.
Medecins San Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic globally and also offers medical assistance to some of the most world's most vulnerable people. Perhaps I can help in some small way.
