Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On Saturday 11th September 2021, I shall be climbing Scafell Pike, England’s tallest mountain standing at 3209ft! My good friend Craig Rothwell is doing the climb with me, we shall be map reading the whole way up, very good job Craig can read maps as they are double Dutch to me!!
I’m doing this to raise money for Farleigh Hospice because with approximately only 40% of their yearly running costs being funded by the local NHS, Farleigh Hospice relies on the support and goodwill of the local community to contribute to the £16,039 it costs to provide their services EACH day.
My climb is in memory of my mum Patricia and my best friend Emma, who were both looked after so amazingly with such kindness and compassion by the Farleigh team.
Mum died when I was 16 on Mother’s Day, after an 8 year battle with cancer. She went through so much which was heartbreaking to watch but Farleigh always tried to help her in whatever way they could over the many months and provided myself with such fantastic support at a time when I felt like my whole world was falling apart.
My best friend Emma died August 2017. The strength and courage she showed all the way through her battle with cancer inspired and touched all who met her. Farleigh were simply fantastic with the everything they did for her, from support at her home through to the care she received when she had to finally go in to stay where she passed away a week later with me holding her hand. I can’t even begin to describe the pain I felt at that time or the complete helplessness of watching her suffer but the Farleigh nurses were so amazing and no words will ever be able to thank them.
Climbing a mountain seemed like a very apt way to raise much needed funds for Farleigh, people like my mum and Emma climb massive mountains in their battles with cancer and life limiting illnesses every day so no matter how hard it is for me to complete, it’ll never be as tough as the fight against cancer. Up until recently just climbing stairs left me out of breathe, so drastic action was needed to even think about climbing such a beast of a mountain like Scafell Pike! Training unfortunately has had to be paused due to an accident I had last year in a supermarket causing damage to my coccyx and knee but once physio has commenced i will hopefully be able to be done training again! it’s hard, sweaty, hot work but my legs need to be sticks of steel to conquer my battle with this mountain!
