Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
For the past two years since the untimely death of my much loved predecessor Gopi Menon, I have had the honour of serving as President of the British Association of Perinatal Medicine. BAPM is a voluntary, professional organisation established by the late Prof. Peter Dunn in 1976, with the aim of ensuring the best possible care for babies and their families in the UK. Every year in the UK over 100,000 babies require additional care after birth, either because they are born too early, or because they are unwell. These babies are cared for by dedicated teams of neonatal nurses, doctors and allied health professionals, often in very challenging circumstances. With our partner organisation, Bliss, BAPM sets standards and provides resources for those involved in neonatal care, ever mindful of the need for parents to be supported to care for their sick or preterm baby, often for many months.
I will be joined in this madness (970 miles over 9 days!) by our son, Iain, and spurred on (I hope) by the thought of raising some cash for BAPM and Bliss. While perhaps more realistic for an anaesthetics trainee who has previously cycled across the US, cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats is a crazy challenge for an ageing neonatal consultant without a lot of cycling experience, but surely it can't compare to the challenges faced by parents of sick newborn babies? Iain and I have self-funded this adventure, so every penny will be used by BAPM or Bliss in improving care for sick and preterm babies. For simplicity, we have created one JustGiving page but we shall be sharing all donations 50:50 between BAPM and Bliss.
Hoping the sun shines in September, that the air remains in our bike tyres and that a favourable wind from the southwest helps us on our journey (why do I think that may not be the case......?)
