Instead of sending flowers, we would be delighted if you could donate to support the Haemochromatosis Society in memory of my lovely Dad, Donald Camm, who passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday 21st September 2021.
Although my father didn't suffer with Haemochromotosis himself, he supported my husband John through this condition for many years and as a family we have decided to continue fundraising for the Haemochromatosis Society in Dad's memory.
John was diagnosed with Haemochromatosis at the age of 42, at a time when it was relatively unknown. If, when he first visited the Doctors 20 years earlier, they knew what they know today, he would not have had to face so many challenges as his condition would have been controlled at an earlier stage and he would very likely still be with us today.
Haemochromatosis is an inherited genetic condition whereby your body does not rid itself of Iron and therefore iron levels build up over time. This build up is known as iron overload and can cause unpleasant symptoms. If not treated it can damage parts of the body such as liver, joints, pancreas and heart.
Raising awareness of early symptoms is really important to the effectiveness of treatment. The earlier the diagnosis, the better chance of not developing severe problems.
So, please give generously, who knows how many of our loved ones have iron overload slowly building up and being passed off as Gout, Arthritis, or even Type 2 diabetes because the basis screening isn't currently being carried out when these symptoms present themselves.
