Story
It is with deep sadness that we share that Elena Hutchinson passed away, on Tuesday 13th September, aged 73, after a 3 year battle with cancer.
She is mourned by husband Martin, son Kieran, her sister Patricia and her wider family in Northern Ireland and Malta.
Elena was born in Malta, raised in Lisburn Northern Ireland and lived here in Leeds for most of her life.
She was a committed and passionate teacher specialising in both art and supporting children with special needs. She was always committed to equality, wanting the best for all children.
A socialist and trade unionist she was active in opposing apartheid, in the work National Union of Teachers and supporting international charities.
In retirement she enjoyed a simple life taking pleasure in her beautiful garden, and in the achievements of her family.
Through the later stages of her illness Elena was supported by St Gemma's Community Team. They provided invaluable support, in addition to the efforts of her wonderful carers and nurses, which allowed her to stay at home at the end of her life as she wanted.
Any donations in Elena's memory will support these excellent services for other families here in Leeds.
