Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In October 2017, after almost 3 years of chemo, my family were given the devastating news that there was no further treatment available for my Dad's cancer and that due to a complication, he didn't have long to live.
He was in hospital at the time and we were given the option of having him transferred to Pendleside Hospice.
We were told that he might not survive the journey, but if he did it would be the best place for him to spend his remaining time, given his complex care needs.
On arrival we were told that not only had Dad survived the journey, but that he had been chatting away to the ambulance staff. We were asked to go into the family room and get a drink and something to eat while they settled Dad into his room.
From that moment onwards the amazing staff took care of Dad and the whole family, as if we were their family. Nothing was too much trouble. We didn't have to concern ourselves with anything other than spending time with Dad. They were really friendly and despite the circumstances there is a truly special and peaceful atmosphere from the moment you walk in.
When we went in to see Dad for the first time he looked better than he had in days. He had his own room with patio doors and a lovely view that could be seen from his bed and all the medical equipment was hidden away in cupboards as far as possible.
The staff were interested in his life story, what he had done before his retirement and his family and interests. He gave them a laugh by telling them that his religion was "Burnley Football Club."
We were invited to stay in the flat upstairs which meant we could sleep there each night and take shifts between us in the chair in Dad's room, so we were never too far away.
My Dad was one of the people I have been closest to in my life and my biggest supporter. He had a good life, but was taken far too soon. I miss him every day.
I don't think I could ever repay the care and kindness shown to us by the staff at Pendleside, but have been looking for the opportunity to give something back ever since.
Walking the Great Wall of China is definitely on my bucket list. I am paying for my own travel and accommodation etc. so all donations will go to Pendleside to help them continue their amazing work and look after others, they way they looked after us.
