Story
Starting on 1 September I’ll be tackling one of the biggest challenges of the natural world, and one of my biggest ever personal challenges, as I spend at least 33 days at sea on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race to raise money for Unicef UK. I have been an avid sailor all my life, but this race is an endurance test like no other, as I join a crew of all ages and experience in a record-breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht.
I’ll be part of ‘Team Guy’ on the first leg of the Clipper Round the World journey, travelling 7,250 miles over two races from London to Uruguay. For me, this is the culmination of more than two years’ planning, intensive training and preparation. I’ve always dreamed of crossing the ocean and I’m nervous, but also extremely excited, to have the opportunity to realise this goal.
We’re raising money for Unicef UK, the world’s leading charity working for children in danger, and I would be grateful for anything you feel you can donate to this fantastic cause. Sailing on the race is a real dream for me but unfortunately, many children worldwide do not have access to basic medical and surgical care, let alone the chance to fulfil their dreams.
Here are just some examples of where your money could go:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- £10 - school text books for 30 children
- £14 - five school backpacks
- £22 - treatment for a child suffering from malaria
- £50 - HIV test kits for 50 mums and their babies
- £160 - school in a box to help 40 children
- £500 - emergency supplies to help Syrian children
- £634 - a pump to provide essential clean, safe drinking water
