Story
On 17 July 1992 I lost my brave mother to Cancer after a long, hard and courageous battle. Never once in all those Radio and Chemo sessions, time in hospital or suffering at home did she complain. She rolled up her sleeves and tackled the disease as best she could.
To give you a measure of her character, in the last conversation I had with my mum I asked her if she was scared. She said "No, not at all, I'm looking forward to meeting my mum" (she was adopted). That example of bravery and faith will always stay with me and helped me after she passed away a day or so later.
At the time she was just 49 years old and I was 20. I didn't know anyone who'd lost a parent who understood what it was like. Tragically, 25 years on I'd struggle to find someone who hasn't been affected by Cancer either directly or indirectly.
I'd like to honour my mum's strength, bravery and fighting spirit by raising some money to help other 20 year old boys to not have to tackle what I had to all those years ago.
The challenge - The Sufferfest Knightood
Yes, it's no surprise that it'll involve riding a bike. It's pretty simple really. I just need to ride a bike indoors for a long, LONG time.
The Sufferfest has produced a library of training videos, I will be riding 10 of them of between 44 and 150 mins, back to back with no more than a 10 minute break between each. That's probably between 10 and 12-hours in the saddle.
The date for this quest is my birthday 2 June. The fantastic folk at David Lloyd Leisure have agreed to me completing this challenge at their gym at Capability Green, Luton... there will be a couple of bikes so, if anyone feels inclined to join me for a stage, they'd be very welcome.
So it's over to you!
I'm already training to get myself ready for this, that's my side of the bargain. If you can find it in your heart to wish me luck, thank you -- if you can find it in your pocket, wallet, purse or back of the sofa to sponsor me, thank you too.
