Story
I’m Dave Brown, I am 63 years old and live in Pershore,
Worcestershire.
In September 2018 I had major surgery performed robotically at New Cross Hospital Wolverhampton, to remove my prostate, having been diagnosed with Prostate cancer in 2017.
My diagnosis followed a routine PSA blood test at my GP Practice and then being monitored, as my PSA level was rising and eventually
resulting in having an MRI scan and prostate biopsy.
The results of the tests confirmed that I had early stage prostate cancer and various treatment options were available (I am lucky that
the cancer was diagnosed early).
I chose to monitor, but following a second MRI scan and biopsy, it was agreed that further treatment was necessary.
I was able to choose to have my prostate removed using robotic surgery, rather than conventional surgery.
There are major benefits in prostate removal using Robotic surgery including less blood loss, smaller incisions and a much faster recovery time.
Whilst I now have my PSA levels checked on a regular basis, so far so good!
Also, during this time, I have had surgery to remove skin cancer from my back and also my forehead.
Currently Worcestershire NHS do not have the surgical robotic system which was used to perform my prostate removal, but there is currently a fund-raising campaign to raise sufficient money to purchase this equipment, known as Rory the Robot Appeal. http://www.rorytherobot.com/TheRoryAppeal.aspx
Whilst I received wonderful care at Wolverhampton New Cross
Hospital, I am hoping to raise as much money as possible to support the appeal, which would enable men such as myself with prostate cancer to be operated on locally in Worcestershire.
On 23 June I am hopefully going to walk (and jog) the 40 miles from Droitwich Spa to Broadway, following the Wychavon Way across some of Worcestershire’s most beautiful countryside.
