Story
Thanks for visiting my Just Giving Page…
On Tuesday November 16th 2021 my Wife Lisa was admitted into the care of St Nicholas Hospice in our local town of Bury St Edmunds with Metastatic Colorectal Cancer (Bowel Cancer). This had devastatingly spread into other areas, meaning we had arrived at the time where the pain management had reached the stage that we couldn’t control it at home anymore, we had done absolutely everything we could and were then told it was palliative care only.
When we left our home that day I didn’t think it would be the last time Lisa would see our house, I honestly thought it would be a few days of respite care and then she would be home again. Lisa spent 5 weeks in care at the hospice, 3 weeks in the Sylvan Ward and then we were able to have our own room for the last 2 weeks in the Rowan Room, this was really helpful as it gave us as a family more privacy. During Lisa’s and our family time at St Nicholas Hospice we were looked after by what I can only describe as absolute Angels. The Nurses and staff were incredibly kind and thoughtful, making Lisa feel comfortable and happy in her surroundings. Lisa described this as her sanctuary, where she could have time to think and also have quality more private visits with our Children. We only had until 19th December as that was the the day we lost our Beautiful Lisa. She was an amazing Wife and Mother, wonderfully caring and selfless, absolutely full of Love for us all.
Usually end of life care is a very difficult subject to talk about especially when it involves someone very close and loved. The respectful way of care at the hospice meant I was able to have some very helpful conversations that enabled us to prepare as well as we could for what might happen. As difficult as it ever was…
The advice and support given to me during such a stressful and traumatic time provided foundations to build a way forward while finding strength and positivity in life knowing that this is what Lisa would’ve wanted. The support has continued over the last year, where I’ve benefited from counselling sessions and spending time volunteering in the hospice garden and helping to organise different fundraising events.
As a way of saying a big thank you to such an important organisation and nearing a year (November)to when Lisa went into the hospice, I would like to raise some important funds towards helping this amazing level of care continue? This involves 3 huge Challenges.
1.London Marathon. 2nd October 2022
2 Athens Marathon 13th November 2022
3. Hardmoors 30 Ultramarathon 7th January 2023
Our fundraising journey in memory of Lisa has been supported overwhelmingly, it’s just incredible to think how much has been raised since the start of 2021. I would like to say how grateful and humbled I am for every donation received. It means so much…
This will be my last running challenge fundraiser before I take a break for 18 months to spend more time with my family, as it takes a lot to plan logistically but it’s worth every bit of effort.
Thanks for everything over the last 2 years ❤️💙
Lisa would’ve been very proud I’m sure.
