People who know me have heard my story many times about "when i nearly died"
I was 8, I remember being out playing on the street on a sunny Saturday not a care in the world, feeling on top of the world, then boom..... Ill in bed.
My Mam rang the doc not knowing what was wrong with me. He came out to the House and seeing the symptoms sent me to hospital knowing something was not right.
When we arrived at hospital to be assessed there was a nurse who had been studying meningitis and spotted the signs, it wasn’t as well know as it is today. By this time I was drifting in and out of consciousness and on my way to intensive care. The doctors told my Mam and Dad to prepare for the worst saying I only had hours left to live. However after a few days I was taken off life support and made a full recovery.
Other people who have had meningitis haven’t been as lucky, others lost limbs and worse. I was very lucky.
Many years later, my Daughter Molly was born, 3 weeks in to her life, she became unwell. so we took a trip to the walk in thinking it was just a cold but wanting to get her checked anyway. We were seen by the nurse and doc at the walk in center and sent by ambulance to the RVI.
I remember going in to the waiting room and sitting reading a poster on the wall about meningitis, the list of symptoms was the same as Molly. I did not say anything at the time, I did not want to be the dramatic parent and obviously we were in the best place for help. After a long few days Molly (my little wonder woman) was on the mend having beaten Meningitis with the help of the wonderful staff at the RVI children’s ward.
So Im running for the Meningitis Research Foundation to try and help find ways to combat Meningitis and also to keep raising awareness of the Illness.
