Story

Help us create a giant tapestry to raise money for ChildLine

Maidstone NSPCC are raising funds specifically for ChildLine. Many of you have previously attended Mary Ratcliffe's concerts and quizzes, but as we can't get together right now this is going to be a little bit different. ChildLine has been busier than ever during the Covid lockdown and we need funds to help train more advisers who can be there to respond to kids when they need us most.

The theme is LOCKDOWN. How has lockdown been for you? What are the feelings that have stayed with you through the last year? How many NHS rainbows have you painted, new plants have you grown, books have you read? Have you been happy to nest alone at home or have you desperately missed going out and seeing all your friends? Have you taken up running to get out of the house, or baking to enjoy being in the house? What have your lockdown struggles and joys been?

We'd like you to create a textile square that shows what lockdown has meant to you, good or bad, to be joined up to other squares creating a record of how we've all been changed by the last year and  the final creation is going to be displayed for the Kent public later in the summer.

Life has been different for everyone over the last year and many of us have struggled with the changes. Being at home all day everyday has not been easy and many more children have been calling Childline for help and guidance. We're hoping that this project will provide a cathartic outlet for everyone to express how lockdown has affected them and the help raise money for our super busy Childline phonelines.

What we need from you:
  • Size. Your square should be 30cm square, with a border of at least 2-3cm so that it can be attached to the rest of the piece.
  • Any kind of textile art; embroidery, applique, needlpoint, fabric painting, tie dye, crochet, the sky's the limit! But it must be sturdy enough to be part of the final joined up peice, so if it's floppy/stretchy/delicate please ensure it's attached to sturdier backing cloth before submission. Feel free to include the ChildLine phone number 0800 1111
  • Deadline. Your square must be received by the NSPCC no later than the 1st of July 2021.
  • Delivery Address. Please post your finished squares to 'Textiles Project', NSPCC, Peartree House, 68 West St, Gillingham, Kent ME7 1EF, UK
  • Entry fee. The fee for taking part is £10. Cash or a cheque payable to "NSPCC" must be delivered with your finished square, or a printout showing your £10 contribution on this Just Giving page.
  • Personal details. Tell us your name and email so that we can let you know about the summer exhibition! Feel free to sew or paint your name on the front or back of your square.

And if you're not feeling the creative vibe right now but still want to help we'd love it if you were moved to contribute to our event via this page. ChildLine has been there for the kids during lockdown, but the phones are busy, the more donations we have the more volunteers we can train to answer those phones.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

ChildLine is the UK's free and confidential, 24 hour helpline for children in distress or danger. Trained volunteer counsellors comfort, advise, support and protect children and young people who may feel they have nowhere else to turn. Children call ChildLine about a wide range of problems, but the most common problems are abuse (both sexual and physical), bullying, serious family tensions, worries about friends' welfare and teenage pregnancy. Children and young people can call ChildLine about anything – no problem is too big or too small. ChildLine is a service provided by the NSPCC
