Story
I am ten and I have always loved the RNLI, but recently I have discovered that they are having to spend a lot of money on repairs, fuel, safety kit, training, boats and foundations for the new jetty in Fowey - and they don't get anything from the government. This is why I want to help.
When I was in holiday in Fowey I went to see the life boat every day and I was allowed to sit in their boat before they went out training one evening. I want to raise money before I see them again.
To raise money I am doing a 42km walk in the Brecon Beacons at the start of the October half term holidays. I am using the same route the SAS use for training*, and going further! I will walk up Pen y Fan and along the ridge and back round the northern side. We will have three overnight stops, and together with my mum and dad, will carry all our things in our rucksacks!
It will be hard, but the thought of everyone who might drown will keep me going.
From the RNLI:
Too many people are still drowning. More than ever we need the RNLI’s help. As a charity, the RNLI depends on our donations so it can go on saving lives and keeping us and our loved ones safe. RNLI lifesavers are our lifeline. They’re the lifeboat crews who provide 24-hour search and rescue right around the UK and Ireland. The lifeguards keeping watch on 240 of the busiest beaches in the UK and Channel Islands. And the RNLI safety teams and educators working tirelessly to stop people getting into trouble in the first place.
How your support helps
£25 will buy a pair of seagoing gloves to protect a crew member's hands in all weathers, keeping them warm and dry, and providing a sure grip when handling the lifeboat and rescue equipment.
£100 will buy a pair of binoculars to keep people safe on the beach.
£260 will buy a helmet to protect our crew from the worst conditions the sea can throw at them.
Thank you.
*Raising money for a rescue service, we realise we cannot put ourselves or others at risk by doing this if the weather is awful. Therefore we will have an alternative lower level route if the ridge is unsafe.
