Caz's 500 Mile Walk through 2021

Caz's 500 Mile Walk · 1 January 2021
January 2022 and I did the miles!
Thank you for your donations, we exceeded the £500 target 😊
Every donation helps to research spinal cord injuries and the potential treatment to repair and aid recovery.
This year, I want to log 500 miles in the next 12 months starting today! (02.01.2021)
Not my day to day full time working miles, but additional miles logged with my Phone App/Fitbit. This means after work/weekends/anytime I can fit in an additional mile!
I would love to achieve this and be able to give something to Spinal Research to assist others with Spinal Cord Injuries.
Most people know that in 2011 I was faced with the need for emergency surgery to remove calcified discs T8/9 from my spinal cord. I went from being active to relying on walking sticks and eventually the wheelchair.
On September the 5th 2011 I had the first of 2 surgeries to drill the discs out. This meant moving my heart, collapsing my lung and removing a rib to get to the disc that was severing my spinal cord. The first surgery was 80% successful in removing the disc so I had it all over again the following week to get the last 20%, with obvious risks to my heart and health.
After what seemed like an eternity in hospital, I came home in a wheelchair and started the task of learning to walk again. I proved them wrong and gave back the wheel chair and discarded the sticks. Of course, there are still challenges along the way, I need medication for nerve pain but I feel that positivity and determination is the key.
Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop effective treatments for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury. Every year 1,000 people in the UK and Ireland are paralysed following an injury to their spinal cord. We receive no government funding and rely entirely on the support of the public to raise funds for our research. Because of the efforts of our supporters, we have funded innovative medical research that has achieved a number of ground breaking changes in the field.
