Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!
I will be Skydiving for Mind to raise support and awareness for mental health. This is a very close and personal charity to me as Mind provided support through the darkest of times whilst the NHS struggled to accommodate; due the growing demand of mental health services. On more than one occasion, I have attempted suicide; spending, long and painful days in hospital fighting to stay alive. Eventually, I was lucky enough to pull through and survived to share my story.
Mental illness is one of the biggest silent killers. Mental illness is not contagious. Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of. Mental illness should be given just as much care and compassion as physical illness. Mental illness is not a choice - it is a disorder, not a decision. I know what it’s like to be afraid of my own mind. I know what it’s like to feel so alone, numb and empty. To wake up every morning to fight the same demons as the day before. We lose almost 6,000 lives per year to suicide in the UK alone. Suicide is not selfish. Suicide is not weak. Suicide does not make you a coward. Suicide feels like the only way to end the pain and suffering. To be free of the demons in your head. To be happy. Why treat people so badly they want to end their lives? We can’t just “suck it up” or “get over it”. You wouldn’t tell someone with a broken leg to get up and walk it off.
Be kind. Be supportive. It’s ok to talk. It’s ok not to be ok. End the stigma.
"We are Mind. Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem. But hundreds of thousands of people are still struggling. We believe no-one should have to face a mental health problem alone. We'll listen, give you support and advice, and fight your corner."
