Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my page.
Since I was 11 I've been fascinated with the idea of swimming the English channel. Something about the freezing waters, swarms of jellyfish and busiest shipping lanes in the world just had me compelled to attempt it (as would anyone I'm sure..?) I will have a pilot boat following me, however after entering the water I will not be able to touch the boat until I reach the French coast. The swim, as the crow flies, is 21 miles however due to the tides and current I will most likely end up swimming closer to 25-30 miles.
I am training everyday in the pool and at weekends in a lake or the sea. Training outdoors will continue all throughout winter as I acclimatise to the cold conditions, as in the crossing no wetsuits are allowed, only a suit, cap and goggles (and of course, the grease!) I'm aiming to finish in around 13 hours, however, dependant on the tide this may be longer due to conditions out of my control.
I chose to swim this for Great Ormond Street in memory of a dear friend who passed away there two years ago. All the money raised will be going to improving overall care and facilities there for future patients so they can continue to treat patients with the best care possible.
I will be regularly updating my progress on my instagram page @ameliaschannelswim2020
