Story

Despite my cries of 'never again' after completing the 100km London to Brighton Challenge 4 years ago, I couldn't resist when I saw the adverts for a new challenge!  A combination of factors mean that I have now signed up to trek 100km (just over 62 miles) in 24 hours around the Yorkshire moors, in aid of the Blind Veterans Association,  at the end of June!  The main reason for this is that this organisation has provided my dad with a huge amount of support, training and equipment over the last couple of years, all of which has helped to give him back some of the independence he lost since his sight has failed.  I hope this event and your generous donations will go some way to helping others in the same way.

This really is a challenge.  People ask 'do you camp overnight?', but this is a continuous 24 hour (plus) trek, with stops only for food and drink, so no camping, no sleep, just walking!  Training has started and I hope to get up to at least one 50km walk by the end of May. I know it can be done and am excited to get walking again! I am fortunate to be teaming up with 2 old school friends from Cardiff for the event, one of whom I haven't seen for 41 years!

So please, if you are able, help this fantastic cause by giving a little (or a lot!) . Just to give you an idea of where the money goes.

• £10 can purchase a talking watch so our veterans can keep track of time, providing more independence.
• £25 can buy a long cane, enabling a blind veteran to get out more. We teach them how to use these on our inductions
• £100 can fund a mobile phone designed for vision-impaired veterans to keep them informed and social
• £325 can buy a Compact plus handheld electronic magnifier, so a blind veterans can read their mail again
• £469 can purchase an iPad. Allowing a blind veteran to browse the internet, utilise apps and send emails
• £1,175 can buy a blind veteran a laptop with Supernova accessibility software, enabling them to use IT equipment.
