Story
My name is Liam, I am 27 years old and I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2015 when I was 22 years old.
I have always been very private in regards to my illness as I always felt embarrassed and try to hide it. Partly because Crohn’s & Colitis is not well known and often not spoken about. To be honest, before I was diagnosed I had never heard of my condition. However, I now know the importance of speaking up and raising awareness about Crohn’s & Colitis.
In 2013 is when I first went to my GP about issues I had developed, after a lot of appointments and keep being misdiagnosed I finally plucked the courage up and spoken to my mom about what was going on. She persisted and got me a referral, before finally being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis having to undergo a colonoscopy. When I was given my results I was told I would be on medication for life. During this time I have had really good periods with limited issues. But more often than not I suffer daily and have to take daily medication to try and manage flare ups.
Like most people I have good days and bad, this condition affects my body physically and mentally. For mr my confidence had been affected and I used to worry a lot about people not understanding me. Thankfully support from my mom and my wife has releaved the pressure I placed on myself. My wife has been my rock through it all and basked in my good times and picked me up in my low times. I have now come to terms with the fact that THIS IS ME and this is a part of my life.
Please can you help by supporting me in whatever way you can, share my story, donate, spread the word. Give people the confidence to speak out and release the weight of their shoulders that being weighing them down for so long.
No medication used to treat Ulcerative Colitis can cure the disease. However, medication can be used manage symptoms and increase the length of symptom-free periods called remissions. The only way to truly cure Ulcerative Colitis is with surgery to remove the colon and rectum.
Between 23 and 45 percent of people with ulcerative colitis will eventually need surgery. Either medication isn’t effective for them, or they’ll develop complications like a hole in the colon that need to be fixed.
