Story
Five years ago this year, I trained with Hetty, bred, raised and trained by Guide Dogs UK with additional training from Support Dogs UK. Hetty is the first and currently only dual purpose Guide and Seizure Alert dog in the UK
Little did I know the life changing difference that Hetty would have on our lives.
Over the last five years, I have lost count of the number of times that she has saved me from serious injury or worse. Last week, she calmly brought me to a stand still and patiently waited. The lady behind me gasped. The rear end of a large lorry wiped-out across the pavement that I would have been walking on had it not he been for my precious Hetty. Many occasions like this, I am blissfully unaware of the protection that my Guardian Angel on four paws affords me.
Since I received Hetty my sight has steadily deteriorated but she has adapted with me to my changing need. I am totally blind in low/bright light levels and as such, she steadies her pace accommodate my drop in confidence.
Having Hetty by my side to safely guide me. I can walk tall with my head held high. The alternative is a long cane…which is extremely stressful and difficult. It takes every ounce of concentration to avoid obstacles such as cars on the pavement, wheelie bins, drop kerbs, over hanging trees, etc.
Raising funds to enable someone else the independence that Hetty gives me.
Every hour another person in the UK goes Blind. When someone loses their sight Guide Dogs is there to make sure that they don't lose their freedom as well.
Guide Dogs revives no government funding & relies entirely on public donations.
