We breed and train guide dogs to give blind people freedom and mobility

Story

The popular annual Glo’-Walkies challenge to sponsor your dog to raise necessary vital funds on the Fylde Coast, again can’t be held over one day as it used to be, though in 2020 it did go ahead, albeit in a very different and safe way.

This year the event will run from 1st to 31st October – meaning you can choose your time and weather!!

October is Guide Dog month, this time beginning its 90th birthday year and you can take up the challenge of the 5.65 km (or 3.5 miles) route from North Pier (FY1 1NE) to The Sandcastle Waterpark (FY4 1BB) – or the other way if you prefer.

Everyone is welcome - runners, walkers, toddlers, pram pushers, dog walkers, wheel chair and mobility scooter users. Fancy dress is not necessary but if you wish to dress up with Glow items to brighten your outfit and walk with friends please do so. The beauty of having a month to complete the challenge is that you can choose the weather and it is up to you when you can fit it in to your time schedule and you can take part any time of day on any day of the week.

The promenade between the North and South Pier structures, providing the weather is good, give great views as the sun sets over the Irish Sea on one side and the Famous Illuminations begin to shine on the other.

The Planned Official Walk Date (with optimum tides) is Friday October 8th, beginning at North Pier at 7pm, which is when Guide Dog Owners, Puppy Raisers and friends will be setting off informally.

There’s no need to register. All we ask is that you take some photographs at the start and finish and share them with us at our Facebook page –Facebook: Fylde Coast Guide Dogs) so we can spread the word!

We suggest £10 per adult and £5 per child as this is the usual cost but the amount is entirely up to you.  You can also ask your supporters to sponsor you and donate too if you wish.

About Guide Dogs

Almost two million people in the UK are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives. Of those, around 180,000 rarely leave their homes alone and lead lonely, isolated lives. Guide Dogs works for a world where people with sight loss are never left out of life, for a world where being blind or partially sighted is not what defines you. A world with enough support to make the challenges of sight loss no barrier to fulfilling hopes and dreams.

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of people with sight loss never leave home alone. We empower visually impaired people to do that and rely on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service.
