Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Alzheimer's disease effects an estimated 850,000 people in the UK. Dementia is a progressive neurological disease which affects multiple brain functions, including memory.
Although often thought of a disease that effects older people, young on-set Alzheimer's effect's people under 65.
Julie is 58. She was diagnosed with young on-set Alzheimer's aged just 55. Although there is no exact formula, Julie's life expectancy is just 7 years from diagnosis.
Julie is no longer able to drive and she can no longer read or write. Julie requires help eating and drinking and is now unable to dress and care for herself.
Without support from Alzheimer's Society, Julie would not be able to function from home. The carers are seen by Julie as 'friends', who help retain Julie's sense of identity and feeling of self-worth.
On 16th-18th September, Mike, Mark, Dave and I are getting on our bikes, riding 140 miles to raise vital funds for the Alzheimer's Society. The Alzheimer's Society is close to our hearts as Mark's nana had Dementia and passed away in 2012. Dave will be cycling in memory of his dad, Robin who had Alzheimer's and passed away last year aged 77.
Alzheimer's continue to support Julie & Mike and we want to help raise some money for this fantastic charity.
