18 Figures in 15 Days · 1 July 2021

For Veterans and Serving Personnel, their most important fight isn't in the military - its finding peace afterwards. Emerge from lockdown with a bang by challenging yourself & supporting a good cause with the 1815 Challenge.

Story

I'm taking the 1815 Challenge for Waterloo Uncovered - please support me in raising money for veterans recovering from the traumas of war!

Eighteen figures of 52nd Foot at Waterloo. Having stumbled upon Bugler Kelk when researching the design for regiment drum and noticing that Ensign Leeke is heavily referenced in Glover's 2020 book, I decided to use the lists in his appendix and D Milner's A-Z of Waterloo men, to humanise to these fellas. Waterloo Uncovered combines world-class archaeology with a programme of care and recovery for veterans and serving military personnel suffering from some of the physical and mental impacts of their service. Since 2015 the charity has been excavating on the site of one of the world's most famous battles - Waterloo in Belgium. Due to Covid-19, they have been unable to visit Waterloo this year, and are instead running four Veteran Support Programmes in place of their excavation. By supporting my 1815 Challenge, you'll be raising vital funds to run these Support Programmes and help even more veterans find peace from war.

When recently modelling La Haye Sainte, I found useful information from the dig and found out what a fantastic task excavating Waterloo is for our veterans. With archeology, ex service personnel are able to employ skills they learnt in service and bring a unique perspective to understanding what would have taken place at specific areas of the battlefield.  The testimony from some of the veterans is inspiring and I want to give some thing back. I hope you’ll join me by sponsoring my attempt to paint eighteen figures in fifteen days.  I plan to base the figures on the 52nd Regiment of foot, who have a tale to tell of their part in the route of the Old Guard..
