The Challenge:To fly from Land's End to John O'Groats (850-900miles) by "flying bike", in August '09. Watch the video to show it in action. I can fly for 2 hours on a full tank of fuel before needing to land and refuel at a nearby petrol station, and will be camping out at night. The BBC seem to think I'm crazy - see the BBC News Video on my website here. Intended route and latest progress can be viewed on Google Maps here.
The Charity: Diabetes is a chronic, life threatening condition which has a life-long impact on all children affected by it. It is also spreading at an alarming rate worldwide, and the costs of treatment are reaching almost unsustainable levels - in the UK for example, more than 10% of the entire NHS budget is spent on the treatment of diabetes alone. Never before has the need for a cure been so strong, particularly amongst children. I myself am also diabetic, and have lived with the condition for more than 30 years, but I've always tried hard to ensure it never gets the better of me. This flying trip might even be a source of inspiration to others - the daily grind of insulin injections and blood sugar tests will continue as normal, but doing these at 5000 feet whilst trying to keep an airplane under control will present an additional challenge!
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are completely safe - they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Thank you very much for any contribution you can make, big or small.
