Berlin Marathon 2023 · 24 September 2023 ·

Every two hours, someone in the UK will become paralysed. Globally, it is estimated that 15.4 million people are living with paralysis. At Spinal Research our vision is to create a world where paralysis can be cured, no matter when the injury occurred or where in the world.

Story

In 2021, I accomplished one of the most significant physical challenges of my life: completing a 26.2-mile run through the heart of Central London. This allowed me to raise £1,800 in support of the Spinal Injuries Association, a charitable organisation dedicated to assisting individuals impacted by spinal cord injuries.

Some of you may already be aware that my father, Mark, was once an avid runner. From 1974 to 1986, he passionately competed in cross-country races, relays, and marathons. However, in 2006, his life took a tragic turn when he experienced a life-changing accident that left him paralyzed from the T-2 vertebra down. At the age of 43, he was told that he would spend the remainder of his life in a wheelchair.

Sadly, this isn’t a one off. There are 60,000 people living with spinal cord injuries in the UK, with an additional 2,500 new cases emerging each year. To put this into perspective, it means that someone is told every four hours that they may never walk again.

Fortunately, research contributions have made significant strides in the past 17 years. Spinal Research, the UK's leading charity, actively funds spinal cord injury research worldwide with the goal of developing effective treatments. They envision a future where paralysis is no longer a life sentence.

In support of this noble cause and their groundbreaking work, this September, I am taking on another World Marathon Major. I will be flying to one of Europe's capitals to participate in the 2023 Berlin Marathon.

Your support can truly transform the lives of those affected. Together, we have the power to shape a future where individuals can regain their mobility and independence.

Thank you for your generosity
