Story
I was born with spina bifida myelomeningocele, which is the most serious form of spina bifida. Basically, the vertebrae in my spine did not form completely, and the nerves and spinal chord at the base of my back were protruding outside my body, in a cyst. In a majority of cases, this leads to damage of the central nervous system, which causes paralysis and loss of sensation below the affected area. There are often bowel and bladder problems, and the likelihood of hydrocephalus.
Very very very fortunately, I am in a small minority to have had a completely succesful operation to close the hole in my spine, and have not suffered any of the symptoms, in what has been a very active and happy life.
So, it's now time for me to do my bit to help people who have not been as lucky as me. I have decided to run the Abingdon Marathon in October, and to raise money for ASBAH, who do a fantastic job supporting people spina bifida and their families.
Many of you will know me through www.fetcheveryone.com, which I have built to support my running habit, and which has exploded into a community of over 3000 runners. If you like the site, and you'd like to say thank you, then this is the perfect way to do it.
Right, that's enough of the empassioned speech, here comes the science bit:
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Association For Spina Bifida And Hydrocephalus will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
If you don't have a compatible debit card and would like to send me a cheque, drop me an email at fetch@fetcheveryone.com, and I will give you my address. If you want to add Gift Aid, put a little note on the back of the cheque, along with your full name and address.
