Story
Fran and Hannah have decided to take on a challenge of life time and trek to Mount Everest Base Camp. This expedition will take place on the 28th Oct 13 to the 11th Nov 13 (12 days).
We are raising money for the an amazing cause the 'Patient Welfare Fund.' The Patient Welfare Fund, a registered charity, derives income from the generosity of the general public, regimental associations and charitable organisations. The fund is used to improve the quality of life during admission. Money is spent on a wide variety of things ranging from recreational activities, laptops, DVD players through to toiletries and other sundry items for the patients. Patients can arrive in Birmingham ahead of their possessions, which can follow on several days later, and so helping them in the first few days is a massive boost.
When the family first arrive this can be particularly difficult, the ‘Patient Welfare Fund,’ provide other facilities and comforts over and above whats funded by the 'system' to allow the family to concentrate on supporting their loved one. On occasions, we also have small projects which require funding, like providing comfortable family facilities such as the new ‘Fisher’ house.
The medical care provided at QEHB is second to none and few places in Europe have built up the same level of experience in dealing with military casualties. But total care is more than just medical care and in the last few years, the administrative and welfare support provided to military patients and their families has become part of our soldiers holistic care.
For many families, being told that a loved one has been wounded and being brought back to QEHB can seem like the world has suddenly changed. It is the 'military bubble' which we at QEHB endeavour to put in place to help the patient group cope with that initial stress and trauma. Whatever is required, Patient Support Services will do its utmost to assist and provide. We go by the maxim ‘He who gives quickly, gives value'.
As military nurses ourselves we have seen how this Charity succeeds in providing the best care for our wounded soldiers.

So why Everest...?
Fran and Hannah have been granted a Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Travel Scholarship to go to Nepal and complete 3 weeks of clinical experience in their Emergency Departments. First stop will be 2 weeks in Pokhara the second largest city in Nepal, a country which suffers from under resourced hospitals and clinics. In Pokhara, people travel from all over the region for healthcare needs. The government hospital has a busy Emergency Department, with a broad spectrum of illness and injuries. There is usually one doctor, one paramedic and one nurse, indicating the scarce resources and the need for a high level of skill. We then set off to a village based in the Annapurna range which has several of the world’s highest mountains. Despite the challenges of living in a village only accessible by foot, hundreds of Nepalese continue to live in rural communities on the slopes. We will live and work within the mountains for one week, where mornings will be spent working in a health outpost, treating whatever ails those that live within walking distance.
