On Friday 29 August 2008, and after a week of waiting for the weather to improve... WE MADE IT!!!!!
12 hours, 51 minutes, and 48 seconds after setting off from Samphire Hoe Beach, Andy landed on the sandy shores of France, just to the North East of Cap Gris-Nez. We were lucky to have a perfect day, flat seas and overcast skies, and jellyfish only spotted once (well done to Nick for not getting stung!)
Many tears have been shed and much champagne has been consumed, and none of us will be visiting a training pool for a while!
Yeehah!!!
-----------------------------------------------
This is, without a doubt, one of the biggest challenges I have ever undertaken.
Our team of 6 are planning to relay across the channel. We will take it in turns to swim for an hour at a time, starting on the beach near Dover and ending up in France some 15 hours later.
We'll be swimming with the Channel Swimming and Piloting Authority, down the busiest sea lane in the world, quite possibly in the dark. And no wetsuits allowed - this is costumes only... It will be cold.
We are all swimming for different causes, and the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust is one close to my heart after my dad was diagnosed some years ago. These guys do great work in providing invaluable patient support at a time when it's most needed. They also rely solely on donations and fundraising, so any amount you feel able to give would be gratefully received.
Some useful info about sponsorship through this site:
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
Needless to say, it would mean the world to me and to Butterfly if you could spare some cash to support the cause. Every little bit helps - I'm ultimately aiming for the £2000 mark!
And finally, please pray for good weather for the week after August Bank Holiday...
Thanks to all,
El
