Story
Everyone knows that funding of the arts in Scotland has taken a real battering since the recession began. Funding of any description - sponsorship, grants and charity - is extremely hard to come by. Yet costs associated with the performing arts have not fallen. The fact is it still costs more to put on anything other than large venue performances than can reasonably be charged through ticket sales.
It is with this in mind that we would like to ask you to support a concert that we are putting on.
Scotland has an astonishing wealth of young classical singing talent. Amongst others the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD) regularly produces some fine, original, skilled voices. Countries with even less support for the arts than Scotland find themselves sending some of their brightest talents here to try to gain connections and an audience.
When we auditioned for the principal roles for Edinburgh Grand Opera’s upcoming performance of Carmen we were overwhelmed by the numbers of talented, professional and soon to be professional singers, who were desperate even for the smallest chance to share their skills. EGO is one of the very few Scottish companies who can still provide this opportunity in a full blown opera. Of course only a few could be given a role in what will be a hugely entertaining production.
We want to put on a performance, for one night only, of some of these young classical solo artists singing a variety of popular operatic numbers, augmented by the Chorus from EGO and giving a taste of some of the popular, dramatic and moving pieces from our forthcoming Carmen.
