We promote choosing smaller families to reduce human pressure on our environment

Story

Thanks for visiting our fundraising page! We are a group of friends who rope each other in to doing stupid things, and it's getting more and more challenging! Last year we cycled coast to coast across the UK in 3.5 days, following the route of Hadrian's Wall.

This year we’re aiming to cycle the ‘Lôn Las Cymru’ a cycle route that runs down the length of Wales from Holyhead to Cardiff and is one of the toughest long distance routes on the National Cycle Network.

Classification: Challenging

Distance: 250 miles plus!

  Our motley crew*:

 [*Meaning: An assorted and ill-disciplined group of ne'er do wells.]:

Andy: Man of a Thousand Bikes (and jackets!)

Rob: Father of Six (and Iestyn)

Herbie: Organiser Unextraordinaire

Joanne: aka The Tortoise

Toby: The Brummy Twin

Rupert: The Plastic Cockney Twin

Alan: Resident Lance Armstrong...

Lee: The Balloonatic

Jim: The Fashionable Chirker

Wayne H: The Philosopher

Wayne J: The Getaway Driver

Caron: aka Postman Pat's Cat

We expect to be tired, wet and saddle-sore all in the name of charity and your donations would make it worthwhile!

This got me thinking about a Horizon special I watched a couple of months ago where David Attenborough investigated whether the world is heading for a population crisis; it was more frightening and disturbing than Fox News!

Check it out on iPlayer or YouTube;

How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00pdjmk

The gist of the programme was that, for a long time now, many people have mentioned that we are overpopulating the planet, but hardly anyone – anyone with spotlight – has proposed any solution.

As David Attenborough is a patron of the Optimum Population Trust (OPT), we would appreciate if you could support us in our adventure by donating money to support OPT.

Cheers!

About OPT

More humanity means fewer humans. If you believe that in the future neither Earth nor the UK will be able to sustain larger populations than they do today, please help to support our work. The Optimum Population Trust is a registered charity funded by membership, donations and bequests. It receives no political or government funding and is independent of political or commercial interests.

MAIN AIMS

To advance the education of the public in issues relating to human population worldwide and its impact on environmental sustainability;

To advance, promote and encourage research to determine optimum and ecologically sustainable human population levels in all or any part or parts of the world and to publicise the results of such research;

To advance environmental protection by promoting policies in the United Kingdom or any other part or parts of the world which will lead or contribute to the achievement of stable human population levels which allow environmental sustainability.

Population is one of the most important but neglected contributors to many of the problems facing us today - our environmental crises and quality of life. We promote positive, choice-based solutions that improve women's rights and enable everyone to choose a smaller family - for people and planet.
