The Big Walk 2019! · 28 June 2019 ·
Thanks for visiting our Big Walk 2019 Just Giving page!
After the success of our previous Big Walks, and with the
excuse of 2019 being the 40th anniversary of my graduation, we couldn’t
resist signing up again, this time to raise funds to award as many scholarships as possible so that talented but disadvantaged students can come to study at the University of Sheffield.
Mark and I had no tuition fees to pay for our degrees, and I
was lucky enough to receive a full grant to cover living expenses, based on my parents’ low income. It wasn’t massive, but just about enough to live on during term time, so I only had to do paid work during the holidays.
Fast forward 40 years and as we all know, things are very
different for today’s students. The cost of university is increasing, which is reducing the number of students able to attend university from lower income and disadvantaged backgrounds. So scholarships are vital to reduce barriers for these students, giving them the opportunity to have a university education.
So it feels like a good time to get our walking boots on again and try and give some of our good fortune back. What’s in store for us in this, our 5th Big Walk? Well, we’ll be aiming to complete 23 miles through the Peak District on Friday 28 June, starting in Bamford and taking in Ladybower, Derwent Edge and Bradfield before making our way down to the University for a celebratory finish at the Uni Arms.
