Story
Thanks for visiting our fundraising page.
Along with 4 fellow sailing friends I am competing in the ARC which is a 2,700NM race under sail from Las Palmas in Gran Canaria to St Lucia in the West Indies. This is an annual event which starts this year on 23 November 08. We are competing on board my Yacht "Flyer of Lorne" which is a Hanse 400e and expect to complete the race in approximately 17days. The event is organised and run by the World Cruising Club with the maximum allowed 225 yachts entered this year. There are stringent safety requirements which have to be met in order to enter the race and the organisers provide a safety net throgh communications and daily position plotting for all the fleet. As this is very much a once in a lifetime opportunity we decided as a crew to raise funds for the RYA Sailability Scotland programme which allows disabled people to take to the water. We thought this appropriate due to the nature of our event. Each crew member has shown a great deal of commitment to this event by giving up 4 weeks of their time to prepare and sail the yacht 24hrs a day during the event.
The RYA is the national governing body for all sailing activities in the UK including Sailability, they provide the training and coaching standards for all recreational sailors going to sea. I am a current RYA member and qualified Yachtmaster Offshore.
