Story
My 13 year old son is a type 1 diabetic. This affects everything he does - all the time. There isn't a minute of the day or activity he does that isn't affected by his blood glucose levels - and his need to manually manage them.
Simple things like walking, running, sitting - things everyone else takes for granted - will affect his blood glucose levels, and he needs to think about these at the same time as thinking of all the other things a normal 13 year old would think about.
Even something as simple as sleeping can't be taken for granted. Not many people go to sleep wondering whether they will wake up or not! However, if your child is type 1 diabetic, this is a distinct possibility. If Samuel's blood glucose levels drop too low, he could very quickly slip into a hypoglycemic coma.
Obviously, we dont want that to happen, so I will get up at least once in the night to check his blood glucose levels.
The Juvenile Diabetes Reseach Foundation (JDRF) are committed to finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. So Samuel wont have to keep worrying about all this.
That's why I've entered the London Marathon - to help raise funds to support their work in finding a cure!
