Wagego means "community" or "helping each other" in the Abasuba language. David Agagwa, one of Mfangano island’s approximately 40,000 residents and a social entrepreneur, founded Wagego in 2012 to help families in his community. The main economical activities on Mfangano include fishing and subsistence farming and the average income is between 1-5 USD per day. An extraordinarily high percentage (30%) of the island’s population is infected by HIV/AIDS, resulting in high numbers of orphaned children and widows struggling to get by. The aim of Wagego is to provide access to basic education, health care & economic empowerment to the most vulnerable: those orphaned & widowed by HIV/AIDS on Mfangano Island.
I was born in 2008 and I am in Class 2. I like drawing, playing football and reading story books. When I grow up, I would like to become a Teacher. My favorite subject is Science. Zeldon Ochieng
Money raised will go directly to the project and will help to supply books and resources for the school and resource centre on the island.
