Story

Nelson Football Club, like many other non league football clubs are currently fighting for their existence due to the current Covid-19 pandemic. We are trying to raise funds for much needed maintenance at the club to ensure we can start the new season, whenever that may be with the adequate facilities needed to compete in the North West Counties.

Nelson is a club with a history unlike any other. In May 1923, Nelson embarked on a pre season tour of Spain in preparation for their new campaign after being crowned Football League Division 3 North Champions the season before. On the 15th May 1923, Nelson beat Real Madrid 4-2 becoming the first English club to beat the Spanish giants on their own turf. The 23/24 season also saw Nelson beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, cementing Dick Crawshaw's name in Nelson history.

1951 saw the arrival of Former Liverpool Manager and Manchester City legend Joe Fagan, who took on a Player Manager role. In his first season, Fagan guided the admirals to the summit of the Lancashire combination after the clubs reform post ww2 saw them compete in non league. In his second season the club finished 5th and twice saw applications to rejoin the football league rejected, prompting Fagan to move on from Nelson. Who knows where Nelson could have been under Fagan's leadership had these been accepted.

In more recent times the club has been tested beyond belief and after appointing a new chairman last season in Shaun Lloyd there are plans in place to re develop the ground in order to meet the criteria to compete in the North West Counties. We are calling on players past and present, football fans who have walked through the turnstiles to watch their team play, local businesses, local people, and on all football people far and wide, to help us keep this club alive and with it, it's fantastic history. Any donation of any size is greatly appreciated and we will be forever grateful.
