Mukhtar was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and for the last 10 years he had struggled with his mental health. In the end, it was too much for him to cope and he chose to end his life.

As a community, the norm is to conceal any death caused as the result of suicide and I write this in hope of trying to break that barrier.

It is unfortunate that in our culture and society, we are judgemental and do not have the understanding and compassion for the affected individual or families. We do not know the plans of Allah, perhaps Mukthar was placed amongst us for reform and that was his purpose- an awakening for us to understand mental illness, learn compassion and understanding, and know that each person is on his/her own journey. We've created this platform to raise awareness and help others so that Mukhtar's struggles will not be in vain, rather a catalyst for discussion so that we can help the other Mukthar’s and their families, and so no one else has to lose a loved one to mental illness.
