Willow Scanlan was born on November 3rd 2017 with Edwards Syndrome. Edwards' syndrome, also known as Trisomy 18, is a rare but serious genetic condition that causes a wide range of severe medical problems.
Willow needs surgery to correct a hole in her heart and defects in two of its valves. Unfortunately medical teams here in Scotland are unwilling to provide this surgery due to her Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18) despite having carried out these operations in the past. In a statement from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde "It is usual clinical practice in the United Kingdom to not offer cardiac surgery to children with Trisomy 18"
However, new and existing research in USA has proven some babies with Edwards Syndrome (Trisomy 18) can go on to childhood and some do live into adulthood. Not operating certainly increases early mortality rates of these children and biases the statistics. Therefore, medical teams in the USA are more pro-active and experienced in carrying out these operations.
Willows parents are now in communication with these overseas specialists in the hope of giving their precious little girl the best possible chance in life. We are therefore raising funds for Willows future treatment and to cover legal fees.
Please help Baby Willow thrive and live and grow into the young lady she deserves to be.
Any unused funds will be used for campaigning to help change the way Trisomy children are offered treatment across the board and donations to Trisomy charities.

7 years agoHi All, Willow was given her operation in Glasgow on "compassionate" Grounds. She nearly died and it was either operate or let her go. She is recovering well and seems to be on the mend. Consequently we are no longer raising funds. As stated we will be using the funds to campaign for Edwards awareness and better understanding of what is possible and the benefits for some children of surgery. We want to try if possible show other parents that Edwards Children can have a life if given a chance. Thanks all for your support, love and empathy xx

7 years agoHi All - We have been told following a referral to NHS England and further discussion on Willows case that she could be assessed for surgery here in Scotland. We have a plan A, B and C in place now to deal with what ever situation we find ourselves. Thanks to everyone for their support and will update as things progress!

7 years agoThanks again to everyones support. Willow will not be offered corrective surgery in Scotland. We need to continue fund raising should NHS England agree with NHS Scotland's assertion "It is usual clinical practice in the United Kingdom to not offer cardiac surgery to children with Trisomy 18" regardless of positive outcomes for those individuals that have been operated on. We have identified surgeons in the USA who are happy to operate. Willows positive outcome is likley to come down to how much money we can raise. Please keep supporting Willow!
