Story
The committee behind DTOD (Deaf Teachers of the Deaf) are extremely keen to raise money to create a professional website to include the following:consultancy, advisory, private tutorial work, mentoring schemes, information for parents of newly diagnosed deaf children, resources for teaching deaf children (including BSL videos by Deaf ToD), advertising area for CSW (Communication Support Workers) in mainstream schools for Deaf children, online discussion forum for registered d/DToD, shared resource area for d/DToD committee members. We also plan to use the funding to develop our workshops further, and purchase resources to promote our group at various academic and professional events.
We feel that with the website, we will be able to make connections with Deaf teachers across the U.K, where we can use the platform to improve our practice, as well as being a source of information and advice for other Deaf Teachers and/or parents. Most importantly, the website will adhere to our mission statements and core values that we have written as per below.
**The committee:
Chair- Martine Monksfield, Vice Chair- Dani Sive, Public Relations- Laila Doobeh and Derek Rogers, Treasurer - Rachael Blowes, Secretary - Patrick Rosenburg, Outer London Representative - Malcolm Sinclair.
Mission Statement
We aim to promote positive outcomes in the education of deaf children and young people through sharing, developing and disseminating exemplar practice by qualified Deaf teachers.
We aim to promote positive outcomes in the education of *Deaf children and *Deaf young people through sharing, developing and disseminating exemplar practice by Deaf Teachers of the *Deaf.
*Deaf refers to both d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing children/young people
Core Values
*Deaf refers to both d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing children/young people
1. We believe the use of British Sign Language in early language years strengthens the language pathway to develop spoken language and literacy skills.
2. We believe all *Deaf children can learn and develop the skills to be successful individuals and independent learners.
3. We believe all *Deaf children should have access to positive *Deaf role models and the *Deaf community.
4. We believe access to both British Sign Language and English are essential for developing language, communication, social and emotional well-being, and a positive *Deaf identity.
5. We believe that all *Deaf children have a right to high quality education by qualified Teachers of the *Deaf.
6. We believe all *Deaf children's individual needs and achievements must be recognised, valued and celebrated.
7. We believe in supporting, fostering and advising on implementing *Deaf children’s rights to a bilingual education as par the Salamanca Statement and Framework for Action on Special Needs Education, CRPD Articles and the 2030 Agenda (World Federation of the Deaf; https://wfdeaf.org/our-work/human-rights-of-the-deaf/).
Many thanks for your contribution, it will really make a difference and will go a long way within Deaf education.
Thanks, The DTOD committee.
