My name is Joshua Penrose and I am currently aiming to raise as much money as possible for four great charities Dove House Hospice, Stroke Association UK, British Lung Foundation & Alzheimer’s UK.

I am doing this to honour the memory of my Grandad John who sadly passed August 11th 2019.

Please read Johns Story & see why I am challenging myself in each month of 2020 through various activities and fundraisers to raise as much as I can for the organisations which helped him and many others.

Johns Story:

John was born 13th February 1944 in Hull and spent most of his early years in the local fishing industry until he suffered a traumatic injury to his arm, with doctors believing he would lose all the ability to use it. Despite this he did not let this hold him back and went on to work as a welder, driver, site manager and a football league referee, fitness fanatic running marathons for fun, all this coinciding with raising 2 children & being a devoted husband, proving what a fighter he was.

In May 2012 he suffered a huge Stroke & we was not sure if he would make it. Fortunately he did & carried on, albeit limited but happy.

Four years later In 2016 he was diagnosed with Fibrosis a condition affecting the Lungs which eventually took him from us In 2019.

In April 2017 he was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia a condition derived from his previous stroke and one of the most common types that affects 150,000 people per year!

Then in August 2019 when his conditions finally got the better of him, he was taken to Dove House Hospice where he spent the last 2 weeks of his life with the best 24hr care & his family by his side until his final day where he died with dignity & respect.

Through all this he received so much support from these organisations which improved his life & the quality of it. Unfortunately, most of these, rely heavily on Donations to give excellent research & provide vital services for end of life care which otherwise wouldn’t exist!

So this is why I have created #DoItForJohn In honour of him & the many others who live with these conditions.

I will challenge myself to 12 challenges, 1 per month in 2020 for; Dementia UK, British Lung Foundation, Stroke Association & Dove House Hospice with the money raised split evenly (25% per charity) at the end of the final challenge in December 2020.
